Hélène Vrijdag (1996, Rennes, FR) (she/her/they) is a Rotterdam-based performer, singer, writer and weaver. She studied Performance at the Academy of Performative Arts in Maastricht and is currently finishing her Masters degree in Gender Studies at Utrecht University. She combines her artistic practice with queer and feminist academic research focused on musicology, pop culture and mythology.

Vocality is at the centre of Hélène’s autonomous work. She uses voice and vocal textures as a political and performative weapon to take in sonic space as a feminist. Hélène explores how her lead vocal — a high pitched clear timbre —can disrupt the fantasy of patriarchal heteronormativity. Hélène’s works are heavily inspired by mythological creatures, meme-culture, queer icons and singing divas throughout music history. Usually, one project materializes in multiple artworks such as a performance, an EP, a book and a visual (textile) art work.
